The Challenge
A breakthrough digital reading tool used in pilots with 50,000 K-8 students. A population of minors whose data carries the strictest privacy obligations in the sector (FERPA, COPPA, and state laws such as SOPIPA/SOPPA). The client needed a complete security program, not a single hire.
The Outcome
The client announced a partnership with a leading curriculum provider serving 4.8 million students, embedding their reading tool across K-8 English Language Arts. A partnership at that scale only proceeds on a foundation of demonstrable security and data-protection maturity.
What We Did
- 1Application security: SAST and SCA pipelines integrated into CI/CD to catch vulnerabilities before release.
- 2Threat modeling: systematic review of the product and data flows handling children's literacy data.
- 3Logging & detection: centralized logging pipelines for monitoring, audit, and incident evidence.
- 4Incident response: IR planning, runbooks, and readiness aligned to breach-notification timelines.
- 5IT & security operations: hardened internal systems, access control, and vendor/data governance.
- 6Compliance posture: security practices mapped to FERPA, COPPA, and state student-privacy requirements.
